Jacuzzi - Common Misperceptions

Confused?  You won't be.

Prepare yourself for this one, but whirlpool, Jacuzzi, spa, and hot tub all basically mean the same thing.  Fine distinctions can be made regarding each term.  "Hot tub" usually refers to a wood-encased, heated pool that may or may not have jets.  Once a contoured acrylic interior is added, your "hot tub" becomes a "spa."  As for "Jacuzzi", it is a brand name, only more glamorous than "Kleenex " or "Xerox."  And of course, "whirlpool" is both a "Jacuzzi" and a "spa," so long as it gives the effect of propelled, spinning water.  Sound like an episode of "Soap"?  Don't worry, some industry professionals have settled on the term "hot tub spa."  That ought to clear things up.

Some weighty decisions

Now that we've navigated  through a useless forest of terms, let's discuss some polemic spa issues.  Many people worry about the weight of a whirlpool spa or whirlpool bath if they intend on having it above the first floor.  The truth is, most of these products exert less pressure on the floor than a refrigerator.  Since the weight is distributed, modern construction can easily withstand whirlpool tubs without extra reinforcement.  If there is any doubt, a structural engineer can tell you for certain.  It would probably be worth the consultation fee.

The thought of heating an outdoor tub of water through the winter gives most people the chills.  Obviously, the temperature you choose greatly affects how much you'll be spending, but don't expect a startling spike in your electric or gas bill.  Modern whirlpools are remarkably efficient and once at your desired temperature require little effort to maintain the heat.  Current prices may change things, but gas has proved the most economical means for heating a whirlpool.

Take your time relaxing

Most importantly, don't let yourself get pressured into buying.  If you have decided to purchase a whirlpool spa, or any luxury item for that matter, haste will hurt your cause.  Your salesman will probably be kind and helpful, but don't make any commitments until you get a private test run.
