Basically, two different types of well pumps are available: shallow well pumps and deep well pumps. Shallow well pumps are typically found above ground and use a suction pipe to pull water up from the aquifer, located no more than 25 feet below the ground. Deep well pumps, on the other hand, are submerged below the aquifer surface, over 500 feet is not unusual, to force the water upward. Unlike shallow well pumps, deep well pumps are not as limited as to how far they can pump, up to 1,200 feet. Most shallow well pumps have suction limits around 33 feet.
Not used exclusively for pumping water out of wells, well pumps are often used on barges and small tankers. Well pumps can even be used for pumping other materials besides water, such as natural gas or oil. Well pumps are also sometimes used in commercial service and construction industries.
