Buying or selling, a good agent is indispensable
Real estate is unfamiliar and somewhat frightening territory for many people.
What makes a good agent?
A realtor needs to know more than house valuations, neighborhoods, and aesthetics. A good agent needs to know what is driving someone to buy. That requires a good ear for listening plus a keen understanding of human nature. Real estate agents who are just out to sell, often forget this.
More than just letters
The letters "CRS" and "GRI" on a business card often reflect an affinity for night classes more than they reflect true expertise and skill. Successful realtors will realize the needs, and even more importantly, the knowledge of their clients. This means that realtors will know when to instruct and lead, or back off and assist the client where needed.
Dos and don'ts
Don't:
Choose an agent by the luck of the draw: do research on the experience of any particular agent
Follow an agents advice blindly; they can make mistakes
Be impressed by letters or titles
Be insulted if agents don't return calls immediately
Put up with agents that are unpleasant to work with
Do:
Think twice about enlisting a family member as an agent
Know what your shopping style and experience is and find an agent that fits
Know your needs in a house and be ready to effectively communicate them
Have a budget in mind that you are determined to follow
Using these tips, you will be better prepared for the experience of buying, or even selling, your home.
