Although not many tools are needed to work with brick or block, those that are, including trowels, jointers, and chisels, are essential. A brick hammer is also a critical part of any mason tool kit. Trowels are used to pick up and spread mortar while jointers are used to strike joints in the brick or block wall.
The family of brick and block tools, while not being a large one, has a deep history. The ancient Egyptians and Sumerians were some of the first civilizations to use bricks and they developed some of the earliest brick and block tools. The Romans also made prolific use of brick, with many of the first stone constructed roads.
Contemporary use of brick construction is still a dominant form of building. The brick and block tools used in stonemasonry, although being crafted out of different materials, have remained unchanged over the years.
