The fact that they are solid and sturdy makes them safer than rope ladders which are primarily used when storage space is an issue.

The first ladders were made from wood, but modern aluminum ladders were developed and weigh much less. Fiberglass ladders are idea when working near electrical wire because fiberglass acts as an insulator against electricity.
