Scaffolding 175

Scaffolding

Scaffolding is typically made up of pipes, boards, and couplers. The pipes are usually fashioned of steel or aluminum although bamboo is still used in Asia. Aluminum allows for greater flexibility than steel and it is also a great deal lighter. The pipes can be purchased in a variety of lengths to accommodate individual project needs.

Boards provide the working surface, or decking, for the scaffold. They are usually made from wood, but metal and even high-strength plastic versions are available. Typically they come in three thicknesses and have a standard width. Couplers are the fittings that hold the pipes together and are available in a number of different styles, depending on intended function.

Other materials used for scaffolding are ladders, ropes, ties, wheels, sheeting, and base plates. Pre-built scaffolds, crafted out of different materials, are also available.

Scaffold Safety

Scaffolding can be a precarious endeavor.  Keep in mind that scaffolds can be safely used if you take care to pay attention to a few caveats. We've compiled a guide to help you keep safe while working.

All About Scaffolding

How much is a scaffold going to cost? This may not be the most important question. Given the safety issues involved with saving money in this area, worrying about type is probably the more prudent concern.
