All About CD Label Makers

Start your own studio

An attractive label on music data can often add a level of polish in your presentation. Many of us enjoy giving mix CDs and photo album CDs as gifts, but a label can also be essential in organizing the hundreds of CDs one can accumulate. Whether you need to find a cd while driving or you need to archive your accounts receivable, a label can be essential in arranging your information.

First, you should bear in mind how much can be stored and saved by keeping well-documented and filed CDs. How much time is wasted each year trying to find data CDs to give to the accountant when you would rather be doing the work that will pay the tax bill. As well, don't forget the in-laws who would like to see the vacation photos. Without having readily identifiable CDs you may find yourself acting as an unwilling stranger on a walk down memory lane.

How labels are made

Starting out, you have to get some software and/or a CD label-making printer, either connected to your computer or a stand-alone device. CD label maker software comes in a number of different forms. For the adventurous there is free CD label maker software available online. Other options include:

Commercial software: Quite quite popular is the Memorex CD/DVD label maker.  These software packages make it easy to use and offer quick formatting and clip art that allow you to make a smart looking cd or dvd quickly. Make sure that the software supports importation of images and text from other programs like MS Word or Adobe Illustrator.

If you decide to do so there are printers manufactured by Casio that will print the label directly on the CD. They can cost around $120.00 but they may be well worth it if you plan to print a great deal of labels.

Some manufacturers offer a somewhat Spartan but useful stand-alone printer that allows text to be created and printed with out the need for booting up the PC. These offer quick identification with a very short turn around time. If you are not interested in frills, or are in an office environment these can be quite useful.

A new area of CD labeling is the laser etching that is being offered by Hewlett Packard. These offer the ability to not only burn the CD but also make the label in one drive. Of course, the label is monochromatic, but even with this trade off it makes available the ability to make quick, clean and professional looking labels.
