What is halogen, anyway?

Halogen bulbs are similar to the incandescent bulb only to the extent that they both use tungsten filaments to create light. Unlike incandescent bulb, halogen bulbs are filled with pressurized halogen gas.

When you turn on a halogen desk lamp, tungsten from its filament is evaporated into the halogen gas of the bulb, thereby carrying the evaporated particles back to the filament and re-depositing them. This process is called the halogen regenerative cycle. It's this cycle that makes halogen desk lamps more reliable and efficient than regular bulbs, giving them a longer life.

Halogen desk lamp safety

Because of halogen's unique nature, the bulb requires proper safety measures, some of which are exclusive to this type of bulb:

Never use a bulb of a different style or higher wattage than intended for the lamp and recommended by the manufacturer. Halogen desk lamps with high wattage can potentially create enough heat to ignite materials, like paper or fabrics, so it's important to avoid letting the hot bulb come in contact with a flammable material.

As with any lamp, it's recommended that you don't leave halogen desk lamps on when you leave the room or house.

Always turn off or unplug a halogen desk lamp before attempting to remove or replace bulbs. Never try to replace or throw away a halogen bulb that is still hot to the touch.

Avoid touching the glass surface of a halogen bulb with your bare hands, as oils from your skin will shorten the life of the bulb, sometimes even causing the surface to breach.
