LED Desk Lamps

Own a marvel of modern technology

Although not brand-new in the world of technology, LEDs are one of the most useful inventions of the 20th century. LED desk lamps and other LED applications, however, are gaining popularity day by day. LED desk lamps use a miniscule amount of energy and are environmentally friendly. They provide exceptional brightness for reading and last for years and years. It's no wonder, then, that LED desk lamps are now being called the future of desktop lighting.

LED? What's that?

LED is an acronym for Light Emitting Diode, a semi-conducting device that emits light when an electric current runs through it. It uses much less power, emits much less heat, and lasts much longer than an incandescent light bulb. The color of LED depends on the chemical composition of the semi-conducting material being used.

Generally, there are two types of LED desk lamps available in today's market: visible and infrared. Visible LEDs come in many colors like white, blue, green, yellow, orange or red.

Different types of LED desk lamps

White LED desk lamps

Bright white LED desk lamps usually the most practical, used for reading, painting or sewing-activities that require clear illumination. These lamps are often made of a cluster of two or more low-wattage LED units. White LED desk lamps offer bright, natural, full-spectrum light that is brighter than your average, higher wattage incandescent and fluorescent lamps.

Colored LED desk lamps

A little more fun than white LEDs, colored LED desk lamps are generally used for nighttime or decorative lighting. Practical uses for infrared LED desk lamps would be for darkroom illumination in photo processing laboratories and in light-sensitive film or paper manufacturing plants.

The wonder bulb: low power usage, extreme life span

LEDs are very unique because of their ultra-low power consumption and extremely long life span. An LED desk lamp usually lasts over 100,000 hours or more than 10 years! That's more than twice as much as the best quality fluorescent bulbs and twenty times longer than the best incandescent bulbs on the market. It gets even better: LEDs are typically housed by solid glass cases that guard them against accidental breakage, thereby adding to their durability.

Colored lights without filters

One commonly overlooked advantage of LED desk lamps is that they're capable of emitting light of an intended color without the use of color filters that traditional lighting methods require. The shape of the LEDs allows light to be focused, unlike incandescent and fluorescent sources that often require an external reflector to collect light and point it in a usable fashion. More focus means more accuracy.
