Popular Digital Camera Accessories

Getting more

So you found the perfect camera with all the bells and whistles. Now what? There is a whole universe of accessories to help you get the most out of your shiny new camera, extending both the usability and lifespan.

Storage and memory

The two most important digital camera accessories are a good storage case and a high capacity memory card.

A good storage case can be the difference between a reliable camera and disposable junk. Having a layer of padding to protect your digital camera from the normal bumps and falls means there is less of a chance that the camera will break on impact or suffer a nasty scratch on the oversized LCD viewfinder you opted for. There are even marine cases available to let you snap some underwater pictures!

Remember…

Most digital cameras come packaged with a memory card or some form of built-in memory. These amenities will hardly hold enough pictures to document your next family reunion or island getaway.

A larger memory card is essential, especially as the resolution on digital cameras keep climbing.

Popular memory card formats come in a variety of sizes, from 64MB to 2GB and up. A 512MB card is generally recommended for the average consumer but for longer shoots, bring a spare or get an even larger memory card. This is another case of "better to have too much than too little."

Keep a spare

A spare battery pack is also a noteworthy accessory. Digital cameras use up batteries very quickly. Many digital camera manufacturers, especially Canon, FujiFilm and Sony, are switching to the AA-size battery packs, allowing the user to use disposable batteries if the battery pack is drained.

Rechargeable batteries are available in almost every size and style and, while they are generally pricy, will save you a fortune that would go to buying disposable batteries.

Some higher-end cameras allow for add-on lenses, such as a telephoto lens, needing only an adapter ring to fit them to the camera's chassis. These lenses are an easy way of getting professional usability out of a general use digital camera.

Others

Other accessories to consider are a power adapter, used for charging batteries inside the camera when available, a USB or FireWire cable (if one wasn't provided with the camera), a flash card reader for quick file transfer to the computer, photo editing software and even a standalone photo printer, which removes the need for a computer.

There are many more accessories available for just about every situation. The only limit is your need… and your pocketbook.
