How to Build a Home Computer Network

Staying connected

It used to be that only those working in the computer industry would have the need for or the know-how to piece together a home computer network. But times have changed and so has the average home. These days more people than ever are computer literate and depend on their computers for work, hobbies, and socializing. This is why home computer networks are becoming more popular and more necessary.

What it can do for you

A home computer network lets you share files between computers, lets all of your computers share the same internet connection, and lets all computers be connected to the same printers, scanners, and other devices.

What's involved

All networks are slightly different because all network users have unique needs. But most networks will have the same basic components. These are: multiple computers; a router and appropriate software; either an Ethernet or wireless path for information to move between computers.

The set up

You will plug your internet connection (DSL, cable modem, or dial-up) into your router. If you are using a wireless router, you'll need to equip each of your computers and each of your devices if you wish, with a wireless adapter. If you are using an Ethernet connection between computers and devices, be aware that while you are saving money on wireless adapters and the like, Ethernet cable can begin to add up. Ethernet connections are usually faster than wireless, but you will have to figure out a way to deal with those cables running all over your house.

Now all there is left to do is get your computers to communicate with one another. How you do this will depend on what type of operating system you are using. Most likely, your system's manufacturer's website will have a step-by-step tutorial to get you connected.
