"Computer software" is a term used to define computer applications, which are programs or games that are installed onto a computer. There are thousands of different titles of software on the consumer market today, all coming from hundreds of different developers.
One category of computer software is security software. Computer security software is designed to clean, protect and shield computers from an array of malicious things such as viruses and spyware.
Antivirus software finds and eradicates viruses that may have infected your computer. A computer virus is simply a tiny bit of programming that can invade a computer system, causing anything from a harmless annoyance to the destruction of your files and programs. Most antivirus software not only finds and kills viruses, but protects the computer from future infection as well.
Anti-spyware software is similar to antivirus software in function, but its target is different. This software seeks out spyware that has been installed on your computer (unbeknownst to you) and deletes it. Spyware (sometimes called adware) is programming that downloads itself to your computer, tracks your browsing habits, and sometimes even redirects your browser to commercial ads. Anti-spyware software also works preventively to shield your computer from future spyware.
Network security software is a bit more passive in function. This software, sometimes sold in suites (collections of software titles), prevents unauthorized access to your home network and personal computers. Most network security programs use a firewall to block unwanted access to your files. The term "firewall" simply describes a software block. Other programs are more complex in design, allowing you to configure what's allowed in and what's not.
Upon first encounter, security software may seem highly technical and hard to use. With a little practice, most users find that security software is quite easy to setup and use. The majority of security software works automatically, anyway. That means after the initial setup, the software works by itself in the background while you're working. However, it will usually alert you if it encounters a problem and will ask you how you would like to handle the problem.
Ten years ago, we used computers with only the smallest bit of thought to security software. The truth was that most users didn't need it, because back then, security wasn't near as much of an issue as it is today. Viruses and spyware wait at every turn, and hackers work harder than ever to infiltrate computer systems. Whether you're a casual home user or a business user, it's extremely important to protect your computer with security software.
