All About Computer Software

"Computer software" is the term used to define computer applications; that is, things like programs or games that you install onto a computer. There are thousands of different titles of computer software on the market today, all coming from hundreds of different developers.

Generally, computer software is installed onto a computer to either enhance the abilities of the computer, or enable it to perform new functions. Either way, the result of most computer software is that it helps a user do something he or she previously couldn't. As mentioned, computer software can also serve as entertainment, as is the case with computer games.

Computer software applications serve nearly as many functions as one could possibly imagine. Some software is designed exclusively to help the computer instead of the user, like security software or antivirus software. This type of software keeps the computer running clean and safe, and prevents future infection from computer viruses or spyware.

Then there are user applications—software designed to help the computer user perform tasks or functions. Examples of user applications are office suites (word processing, spreadsheets, databases), telephony software, and graphic design or photo software.

The array of user applications available to the public is vast, and is in no way limited to just the examples above. Some computer software is designed for a highly specialized purpose, such as forensic software, ancestry software, automotive software, and much more.

Computer software is available for purchase in local stores and chains, or from Internet sites where you can download the software. Many software developers will release shareware, which is simply a way for customers to "try it before you buy it." Most shareware can be downloaded from the Internet and is only usable for a short period (usually two to four weeks). After that, a customer must either purchase a license to keep using the software or remove it from their computer.

There is another type of software called freeware. This software is completely free to use and own. Sometimes the software will feature embedded advertisements to offset costs, while others are free to use with no advertisements whatsoever. The majority of freeware is can only be downloaded from the Internet; it is not available in stores.

Computer software is a huge component of the functionality of computers. Without it, people would be extremely limited in what they could do with computers. Most computer software was born out of necessity; chances are, if you need your computer to do something it can’t, there are software titles available to meet your exact needs.
