Laptop Terms

When purchasing a laptop computer or laptop accessories, you'll probably come across a few unfamiliar terms. While the world of portable computing is by no means overly complicated, it does help to know a few terms and definitions out of the gate.

Following is a brief summary of popular laptop terms to help you understand what you're looking for.

Notebook – A notebook computer and laptop computer are the same thing. Some people say laptop and some say notebook. Regardless of preference, they are the same thing.

Tablet PC – A Tablet PC is a new kind of laptop that usually features a 360-degree swivel screen and touch-sensitive technology. You can actually hold these and "write" on them as if they were a tablet, hence the name.

Operating System – Also known as "OS," the operating system simply refers to the software environment installed on the machine. Windows XP, for example, is an operating system.

Active Matrix Display – Most laptops today feature active matrix screens, so don't be lured in to thinking you're getting something unique. However, always make sure that the laptop you're buying does have an active matrix screen, as they are brighter and easier to read.

Laptop Case – A laptop case is simply a briefcase or bag designed to hold a laptop. Cases come in many different styles, from messenger bags to backpacks to attaché-style cases. Find one that you're comfortable with, and make sure it has plenty of room to store your extra gear.

Refurbished Laptops – Plain and simple, a refurbished laptop is usually one that has been used, returned to the manufacturer, fixed and cleaned, and then offered for sale again. Refurbished laptops can save you quite a bit of money, but be aware that the full manufacturer's warranty is usually not offered on refurbished models.

Apple Laptops – Apple laptops, usually called PowerBooks, are simply laptop computers made by Apple. Be aware that the operating system on these laptops is not a Windows environment, like you may be used to. Many Apple enthusiasts feel that the Apple operating system has advantages over Windows. Do a little research first if you're thinking of buying an Apple, as the majority of software on the market is not compatible with the Apple operating system.

Battery Capacity – The battery capacity is the measurement of the maximum charge a laptop battery can hold. Average laptop batteries can hold a charge for about four hours. Some brands offer extended batteries that push the limit even further, able to hold a charge for over six hours. The higher battery capacity the better!
