Like most advancements in technology, modern printers were developed on the progress made by many earlier versions. Among many companies, Hewlett-Packard and Canon claim a considerable share of credit for the invention of today's inkjet printer. In the worldwide consumer market, four companies account for the majority of inkjet printer sales:
Canon
Hewlett-Packard
Epson
Lexmark
Although these four companies lead the pack, many more companies produce printers. For example, there are literally hundreds of "grey market" printer brands worldwide. These manufacturers are the technological equivalent of buying a generic product at the grocery store.
When it comes to quality, it's often a game of hit-or-miss. There are plenty of reputable "generic” printer manufacturers, but there are equally as many inferior. When buying a printer from a smaller manufacturer, do a little research on the Internet for printer reviews. This will help you find out what others are saying about the quality of the brand.
Generally speaking, most printers that are bundled with computer systems are of good quality. For example, computer manufacturers like Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Gateway, and more will commonly include a printer (among other peripherals) when buying a computer and monitor setup. These are computer manufacturers that produce a wide variety of computer parts and accessories.
Other companies such as Xerox, Lexmark, Canon, or Brother don't manufacture personal computers, instead focusing on just printers (and other products like cameras, scanners, copiers, etc.). Some people prefer these companies because they feel that more attention and detail is put into the craftsmanship of products created exclusively by a company.
