The remote control is perhaps one of the most convenient inventions of our time. With today's technology, it is hard to imagine having to get up and walk to your entertainment cabinet each time you need to change the channel, or turn up the volume.
Remote controls work by sending infrared signals to the TV or other electronic component, which control a variety of functions. Today's remote controls are capable of controlling multiple devices, such as a cable box, TV, DVD player, and stereo. This eliminates the need to have multiple controllers spread out over tables and couches (which also gives you fewer remote controls to lose).
Universal remote controls are capable of controlling multiple units by learning the commands of different remotes. Most of these remotes can be set up either with a pre-existing database of commands, or by manually "teaching" the remote commands from the original.
