DVD Recorder FAQ

We've all heard about DVD recorders, but does anyone know what they actually are? How are they different from DVD players or DVD burners? What is the point of having one if I already own a DVD burner? These are all valid questions. Below is a list of frequently asked questions about DVD recorders that should clear up any further confusion.

What is the difference between a DVD recorder and a DVD burner?

Both DVD recorders and DVD burners can create DVDs by burning onto a blank disc; however, DVD recorders are typically used like VCRs in that they record analog video, such as television, and from digital camcorders.

Can DVD recorders be used a primary DVD player?

The good news is that most DVD recorders also make adequate DVD players, eliminating the need for separate units. Most DVD recorders offer many of the same features as DVD players such as surround sound and compatibility with most disc formats. But don't expect anything too fancy.

Can chapters or menus be created with a DVD recorder?

The simple answer is yes. Most DVD recorders even do this automatically by inserting index marks every five minutes or so, onto a recorded DVD. Some may even allow you to insert your own index marks.

If you want to create chapters, you must record video segments separately. You can do this by simply recording, then stopping where you want to end the chapter, then repeating the process.

Can I watch one TV program while recording another with my DVD recorder?

Yes, as long as you have a cable-ready television, meaning that you are not using a cable box or satellite box. Cable and satellite boxes can typically only download one channel at a time.

How much time can I record on a DVD?

The most that you could record on to a DVD is probably about 8 hours. Typical DVD recorders offer 1-, 2-, 4-, and 6-hour recording settings, while atypical ones might offer 2.5-, 3.5-, 4.5-, and 8-hour modes.

Do DVD recorders have hard drives?

Normal DVD recorders do not have hard drives, but you can now purchase DVD Recorder/Hard Drive combo units.
