A new technology that hit the market only a few years ago, HDTV (or "High-Definition TV") lets you watch TV and cable programming at much higher resolutions than standard TV. Standard HDTV is defined as any picture with more than 1,080 active lines with a 16:9 (or widescreen) aspect ratio.

Basically, all this boils down to a cleaner, sharper picture that can be viewed in the true widescreen format. Today, many cable companies and networks are broadcasting HDTV programming, which is where an HDTV tuner comes in. Without it, you can't watch TV in true HDTV.
