Going Dutch
Not so long ago, Klass Compaan, Dutch physicist and unwitting cornerstone to the current music industry, dreamt up a method for storing digital sound recordings on a tiny, circular glass. With the help of technologically pioneering companies like Philips and Sony, his innovation spurned the creation of devices that could reproduce unprecedented sound quality just about anywhere imaginable. The innovation was the compact disc; the device, the compact disc player. In only a few short decades the pervasiveness of these instruments has spread to every home, car, recreational runner and sleepy undergrad.
Today's is a fast-paced world, and we have much gratitude to show these trailblazers for keeping the beat. But trailblazers they may be, none were visionary enough to conceive that the compact disc player may also serve us in the shower. Even in the private confines of the shower, where everybody sings well, a brazen tenor may quaver a bit looking for the right pitch. Now that tenor can resonate along with his favorite wake up tunes blasting out of a genuine compact disc player no larger than an economy-size bottle of shampoo.
A shower serenade
It makes sense. Some songs are best performed in the shower. A hefty curtain and spraying water adequately muffle the oft times embarrassing enthusiasm generated by a building, ethereal, pop crescendo a la the Turtles' "Happy Together." And scatting along in front of loved ones with the bouncy horns of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass in "A Taste of Honey" may leave you red in the face - but not in the shower.
A surprising selection is available. Sony makes a stout looking unit that can hang from a shower head or nestle next to your conditioner in a shower caddy. However, if you haven't got a fog-free mirror already, Jensen and plenty of other brands feature this handy second function. Shop around, they are all reasonably priced at around the cost of a month's worth of Nioxin or some of the fancier soaps.
