Shams are decorative pillow covers used to heighten the appearance of the bedroom setting. Unlike regular pillow cases, shams are used purely for decorative purposes and are usually only used when the bed is made up formally. In formal bed making, a total of four pillows are generally used. Two pillows with regular pillow cases are laid out first and are topped with two decorative pillows wearing shams for an elegant appearance.

Whereas regular pillow cases have an opening at the end used to slide the pillow inside, a pillow sham features an overlapped opening in the middle that the pillow fits inside. This provides a snug fit and makes it difficult to tell where the opening of the sham is.

One great thing about decorative pillow shams is their versatility. Manufacturers produce shams for all shapes and sizes and pillows, from oversized bed pillows to small throw pillows and even whacky shaped pillows. Pillow shams often are available in sets in order to cover your entire collection of pillows for a more uniform appearance. Shams are also available in a number of wonderful fabrics such as satin, silk, and velvet, according to your tastes.

What's it for?

Much like your grandmother's formal dining room, which always seems to be set to entertain a large dinner party, shams are not really meant to be used. Pillow shams are purely for decoration. When it's time to turn down the bed, it’s time to take off the shams and store them away for later use. Pillow shams are often used in beds without headboards to give the illusion of a backboard or headboard. Pillow shams can be placed upright on top of the sleeping pillows and propped against the wall to create this effect. For those people who like a little extra cushion under their head while they sleep, a pillow sham can be used underneath the sleeping pillow.

There are a number of things to consider before purchasing a set of pillow shams. The first thing you want to think about is who it's for. The age group will significantly narrow your search. There are different types of pillow shams for every generation, from babies to the elderly. For instance, you might choose a set of pillow shams with bright colors and little furry animals for a young childs room. For a wedding gift, consider a more sensual set of shams made from materials such as satin, velvet, or silk. A set of shams for an elderly couple might feature more muted colors or delicate lace.
