Kids Comforter Cleaning and Maintenance

Clean it up

Comforters, even kids comforters, are large and bulky and hard to maintain. Fitted sheets and flat sheets can be tossed in the washer and drier easily, but comforters present somewhat of a problem when it comes to cleaning and maintenance. Luckily, your kids comforter set will usually come with handy directions on how to care for the comforter. Most manufacturers recommend that you have your comforters professionally washed every 3 to 5 years.

Washing your comforter

Unless otherwise noted, most childrens comforters can be machine washed; however, home washing machines are typically not large enough to handle even the smaller kids comforters. So bite the bullet and take a trip to the laundry mat and make use of their oversized washers and driers.

You typically want to use warm water to wash your childs comforter along with mild detergent. Bleach is usually not recommended. Because of the bulk of kids comforters, be sure that it is thoroughly rinsed before drying. If you prefer, you may choose to have your kid comforter professionally dry cleaned to avoid any damage that it might incur during machine washing. Hand washing is always an option as well.

Drying your comforter

Remember that oversized machine dryers are high powered. Be sure to dry your childs comforter on the lowest setting possible. Afterward, you may want to steam the outer fabric shell of your kids comforter to get wrinkles, but never iron. Much damage can be caused to your comforter by applying too much heat to it.

Down comforters

If your child has a down comforter, there are special things you want to do to care for it. Down comforters should be washed in larger commercial machines or by hand, but never in home machines. They are simply too small and can end up damaging your comforter. It is also recommended that you allow down comforters to dry for approximately 8 to 12 hours before using.

Although down comforters are very popular among adults for their overall comfort and coziness, it is typically not recommended to allow young children to sleep with down comforters. Down comforters are extremely warm and produce a lot of internal heat in human beings. Children at younger ages are unable to regulate their body temperatures the way adults can and may become dangerously overheated. Down comforters have are said to be the culprits in some cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
