All About Kids Room Storage

Do away with clutter!

If your child is like 99% of other children, chances are his or her room is filled with oodles of toys, books, games, puzzles, balls, stuffed animals, and dolls. There's also a good chance that most of those toys are scattered all over the floor. Smart, efficient kids room storage will not only organize a room to make it more useful and livable, but also make the chore of cleaning the room quicker and smoother.

Closets

Obviously, closets are optimal for storing clothes, coats, and shoes, but with a few modifications they can become complete kids room storage solutions.

In order to make the closet easily usable for children, lower the clothes bar to a height they can reach and add shelves and drawers to keep folded clothes or smaller toys. Clothes that aren't worn often should be stored on higher shelves or in the back of the closet, leaving oft-used items readily accessible at the front.

Supplement closet space with a dresser with multiple drawers or armoire that features both hanging space and shelves for smaller items.

Toy chests/toy boxes

Classic toy boxes are perfect for storing all shapes and sizes of toys and are best for quick cleaning. Simply toss toys in and the room looks neater and more organized in seconds.

When buying children's toy boxes, you should look for chests that feature safety features such as hinges that hold the lid open and won't allow accidental slamming and cutouts just under the lid so your child's fingers won't get pinched as they are closing the toy box. To prevent suffocation should your child ever fall or crawl inside, toy boxes should feature adequate ventilation as well as lids that are lightweight and free of any type of latch or lock.

Bookshelves

Shelves are possibly the most versatile kids room storage solution. In addition to holding books, games, and puzzles, bookshelves are also ideal to store and display dolls, stuffed animals, model airplanes, and remote controlled cars and trucks.

Smaller items can be sorted and organized into color coordinated bins or baskets in order to be out of sight but still easily accessible. A high shelf about 18 inches below the ceiling all the way around the room makes the perfect spot to display awards and trophies, art projects, and models.

Under-bed storage

For items that aren't used often, such as seasonal clothes or sports equipment, boxes or storage bins that fit under beds are handy. Rolling boxes slide out easily and the lids will keep your child's items free of dust.

With a little planning, you can tailor storage solutions to fit your child's room perfectly. An assortment of shelves, drawers, hooks, hangers, baskets, and boxes will keep the whole room organized and clutter-free.
