A room-by-room checklist
Parents sometimes aren't aware of the many dangers a curious child faces in an ordinary home. Here's some basic tips to ensure the safety of your child.
Child safety in the kitchen
Think before putting anything in any garbage can. Razors, sharp metal edges on cans, and cleaning supplies all pose child safety hazards.
While cooking, turn handles toward the stove to keep a curious child at bay.
Ensure safety by keeping your child away from the kitchen when you cook. From dangerous spills to sharp knives, cooking can be a safety risk for your child.
Avoid putting knives in the dishwasher. Low to the ground, cave-like, and easy to open, your child will want to explore it.
Child safety in the bathroom
Bathrooms are giant safety dangers for a child. Consider installing a hook and eye latch at the top of the bathroom door.
Store medicine away from little hands and in child proof containers.
Lower the temperature of your hot water heater until you can comfortably place your hand under the faucet while running hot water. This oft-overlooked safety measure will prevent your child from scalding an inquiring hand.
Never leave plugged-in electrical cords hanging over the counter.
Never leave a child unattended during bath time.
Use a bath mat or textured decals on the bottom of the tub to keep your child from slipping.
Child safety in other rooms
Guard a child from stairs and off-limits rooms with safety gates.
To ensure the safety of your child's tender head and arms, replace sharp-cornered tables and coffee tables with round-cornered ones. You can also purchase corner protectors.
Secure all bookshelves to the walls and ceiling.
Avoid storing dangerous materials in makeshift containers. Hot grease in a peanut can or used motor oil in a soda bottle poses a veiled safety threat to your child.
Frequently inspect the floors for sharp objects, choking hazards, and other potential safety threats to your child.
