The word Fondue is derived from the French verb fonder, meaning "to melt." It is believed that fondue originated in Switzerland hundreds of years ago. Europeans and Americans rediscovered fondue in the 1960s and 1970s. At this time fondue sets became all the rage.
Fondue sets vary greatly in price, but the essential items are the same. Fondue sets include a fondue pot, heating element, and long handled fondue forks. The fondue pot may be of heavy ceramic, aluminum, copper, or stainless steel. It should be a heavy enough material to not scorch the melted cheese. The heat source ranges from a tea light candle to an electric heating element. Long fondue forks are generally metal with a plastic or wooden handle for holding. They are pointed at the end to keep bread, meat, or vegetables stable when dipping into melted cheese or hot oil.
