Saucepans are deep, round, and usually have long handles. Saucepans are used for boiling, stewing, and creating sauces and soups. The sides can be straight or flared and saucepans can be deep, or as shallow as 3 inches. Depending on the style the versatile saucepan can be used to make soups and sauces, boil foods, and braise. The low-sided saucepans can even be used to saute.
Saucepans range in size from one pint to four quarts. Saucepans are made from various materials including aluminum, anodized aluminum, ceramic, copper, enameled cast iron or enameled steel, glass, and stainless steel. When choosing a saucepan, look for one that is well balanced, with a handle that allows the pan to be easily lifted.
