Can openers are simple devices used to open aluminum and other types of metal cans. There are a number of different types of can openers currently on the market, ranging from the simple openers found on pocket knives, to the common handheld manual can opener, to the kitchen appliance electric can opener.
Can opener history
In 1810 the first tin cans were invented, ushering in the need for something to conveniently open them. These first heavy cans where difficult to open and many people used knives or rocks as can openers. It wasn't until about 50 years later that tin cans began to be developed using lighter metals in order for easier access. In 1858, Connecticut born Ezra Warner became the first person to patent what is now known as a can opener. A little more than a decade later, in 1870, came the cutting wheel can opener. In 1925 the San Francisco-based Star Can Company updated the rotating wheel design with a serrated edge. In 1931, the very first electrical can opener appeared on the market.
