A brief history of coffee makers

The art of coffee making has evolved greatly since the early days of boiling water. The first percolator was invented in France in the early part of the 1800s. It was around this time that people began experimenting with pouring boiling water over filters full of ground coffee. It is this same basic technology that led to the very first automatic drip-brew coffee maker, Mr. Coffee, in 1972. In essence, it was a combination of both the percolating process and the drip-brew process, except that the water was heated in a completely separate chamber, unlike the percolator, by an electrical current. Although standard percolators still manage find their way into customers' kitchens, drip-brew coffee makers remain the most popular method of making that first cup of Joe in the morning.
