The coffee maker is a simple electric appliance that uses the drip-brew method of making coffee. Grounds are placed in a filtered basket, and hot water is then applied and filtered through, resulting in the final product. The coffee machine is an automated way to use the drip-brew process, and in 1972, Mr. Coffee introduced the first electric coffee maker. This unit featured a carafe, basket, and separate water tank. The water was heated by a heating element located in the tank and via a percolating process, run through the filter.
Through the years, the coffee maker has seen many designs and numerous style changes, but for the most part, the simple method has remained unchanged. Also, the popularity of coffee and coffee makers has continually increased. Coffee makers are as common in the kitchen as a toaster and microwave.
