Josephine Cochrane was the daughter of John Fitch, the inventor of the steamboat. She didn't actually wash dishes herself, but she invented the manual crank dishwasher because she was tired of her servants chipping her fine china.
Since the hand crank models, dishwashers have seen many advances, from fixed plumbing to high temperature automatic wash and rinsing. Most modern dishwashers are energy efficient and can clean a load of dishes quickly and quietly. Using extremely hot water, high-pressure, and cleaning detergents, dishwashers can handle all manner of food residue. With rinse agents and scientifically advanced detergents, larger loads of dishes can be cleaned more effectively than by hand. Manufacturers are constantly offering new innovations such as computer-assisted cycles, quieter operations, and modern design styles to fit the needs of a wide variety of kitchens and homeowners.
Ironically, it is not recommended that fine china be washed in a modern dishwasher. Click on more articles below for all things related to dishwashers.
