It is considered a well-respected craft to be able to pull a perfect shot of the rich liquid from an espresso machine. Commercial espresso machines are large and designed for high-volume usage. They heat water to an exact temperature and extrude the water at just the right pressure for the perfect espresso.
Over the years, manufacturers have designed espresso machines for in-home use. These units are about the same size as a standard coffee maker but use slightly different methods to create the espresso. A tank is filled with water while the finely ground espresso beans are tamped into the portafilter. Once connected, the heating element is turned on, and pressure starts to build. Then, water is steamed through the filter, and espresso is procured. Steam wands are also a feature on espresso machines and used to foam milk or cream for drinks such as the latte or cappuccino.
