Ice cream makers are available in both electric and manual type units. The basic design of an ice cream maker uses an inner container filled with a cream mixture, while an outside chamber is filled with ice to cool. During cooling, the inner chamber is constantly churned to add air and prevent ice crystals from forming. This results in a smooth and creamy texture to the ice cream.
The time it takes to make ice cream from an ice cream maker depends on the maker itself and the recipe. Usually, ice cream is ready to be eaten straight out of the ice cream maker. Small electric models are ideal for countertop use and usually have a shorter finish time than larger hand-crank units. Manual units are less common today than the more convenient electric models.
