With an endless supply of kitchen conveniences flooding the market every year, none has been so consistent in its usage as the microwave oven. Once its technology was mastered and manufacturers finally created units that were practical, the public embraced this new cooking device. It is still the most popular way to cook popcorn, above oil or hot air. But it was not always so convenient to heat up a few hot dogs or warm coffee. Early models were over 5 feet tall and cost $3,000! And that was in the 1940s. Needless to say, not many kitchens had microwave ovens back then.
Today, microwave ovens are compact, energy efficient, and much more affordable. Though many professional chefs find little use for the microwave, the general public has made this tool a part of its fast-paced, on-the-go lifestyle.
