The refrigerator has come a long way since the hay-lined, ice-filled holes in the ground our ancestors had to use. It might even be hard to imagine life without a handy water and ice dispenser, not to mention a place to keep the ice cream and frozen pizza. In the 19th century, the term "icebox" really meant a box with ice in it. It kept food just cool enough to extend its life a bit longer before spoiling.
