Waffle Makers

Everyone loves waffles, and that's why adding a waffle maker to your kitchen is a smart move. Regular and Belgian waffle makers are durable, come in a variety of sizes, and are easy to use.

Belgian or regular?

So what's the difference between a plain 'ole waffle and a Belgian waffle anyway? The main difference is size. Belgian waffle makers contain deeper grids, which allow for more batter. In turn, the waffle comes out larger, and more fluffy, than a regular waffle. Belgian waffles and regular (American) waffles have one other difference: American are made with baking soda, while Belgian are made with yeast.

Cook it up

Making a regular or Belgian waffle is easy! Before anything, turn the waffle maker on so that it has time to heat up. Next, you'll want to make up the batter. This can be done either from a mix (usually you just add water, an egg, and some oil), or from scratch. Next, pour the batter in the maker. Set the timer. Your waffle will be done in no time-usually only a couple of minutes.

Regular waffles are usually topped with butter and maple syrup, while Belgian waffles are often topped with fruit, whipped cream, yogurt, or chocolate drizzle.

Some sizzlin' features

When purchasing a waffle maker, it's good to know what kind of features are available to you. Here are some options:

Most waffles makers are designed to create 1, 2 or 4 waffles, or slices. A regular waffle maker, which sometimes doubles as a sandwich maker, can often make 2-4 waffles, while most Belgian waffle makers make 1 waffle at a time.

Many Waffle makers are made of brushed stainless steel. Looks (and is!) professional.

Most waffle makers contain an insulated handle. If you chose a waffle maker that needs to be turned after pouring the batter, this handle reduces the risk of burns or the need to use potholders.

Waffle makers contain a setting button. The setting button usually features a timer and a ready light. You won't have to worry about burnt waffles!

Waffle makers can be round or square in shape. Most Belgian waffle makers are round.

Many waffle makers come with a trip tray. The tray catches batter that drips over the side, which helps keep your kitchen clean.

Spend a little or a lot

Belgian waffle makers vary in price, from $60-$100. Professional, larger units can cost up to $200.00. If you're looking for a great waffle maker that is relatively inexpensive, try a Krups Expert Waffle Maker.
