Methods for kitchen counter top cleaning and maintenance depend on the type of counter being cleaned. Every finish carries with it a unique set of problems and possibilities. It is important to find a technique that is powerful and thorough, but will not damage the counter tops.
Laminates
Plastic laminates, such as Formica, provide durable surfaces in a variety of colors. They should be cleaned with non-abrasive cleansers to prevent scratches. Sensitive to extreme heat, plastic laminates can develop burns or cracks, so hot pans should always be set on a pot rest or other device. Although long-lasting, the finish of a plastic laminate counter top can dull with age. Treating the surface with a wax-based product reduces staining and facilitates cleanup.
Solid surface materials
Similar in appearance to the outer layer of plastic laminates, solid surface materials, such as Corian, Gibralter, and Avonite, are as durable as laminates and available in the same variety of colors. They should be cleaned with a non-abrasive cleanser. Shallow scratches and singe marks can be buffed out with an abrasive pad applied gently in a circular motion.
Ceramic and porcelain
Versatile and artistic, homeowners prize ceramic and porcelain tile kitchen counter tops for their bright, reflective surface. To maintain the finish, tile should be cleaned with household cleaner and wiped with a sponge. Abrasive cleaners can damage the shiny glaze of the tile. The grout between the tiles can chip off or erode over time, so it should be resealed periodically.
Granite
Expensive and luxurious, granite counter tops require significant care. Vulnerable to grease stains, granite counter tops should be wiped and dried after each use. The finish on the counter top must be resealed from time to time to protect the stone beneath from water damage.
Marble
Beautiful marble kitchen counter tops , popular for pastry tables, can be etched or burned by food acids. Different sealants are required for areas that will be used for cooking, since some commercial products can leech out into food. The finish on these counters must be reapplied every few years.
Wood
Wood kitchen counter tops, handsome and natural, stain easily. Spots may develop if water stands on the surface for any length of time. Additionally, bacteria can collect on the surface, so areas used for the preparation of meats should be sanitized thoroughly after each use. Exposed areas must be treated with mineral oil weekly and finished surfaces can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
