Steak knives are a common addition to many knife sets. They are typically only used in a table setting and are ideal for cutting steaks, poultry, and other foods. Most steak knives have a thin blade with a serrated edge giving it versatility for many types of food.
Unlike other kitchen blades, steak knives need less attention to sharpening on a regular basis though care should still be taken when cleaning and storing them. A good steak knife should last a lifetime and maintain a proper edge. As with all knives, a sharp steak knife is actually a safe steak knife. The blade should easily slice through thick cuts of beef and make short work of poultry and vegetables. If the blade is dull, more work is required and slippage can cause accidental injury. It is not recommended to use a steak knife for preparing food, as the blade is not designed for kitchen use.
