Types of Kitchen Knife Storage

Store it for safety

Want to keep your kitchen safe and free of accidents? One great way to do this is to properly store knives when you aren't using them, as knives are responsible for the largest percentage of injuries that occur in the kitchen. There are several ways that you can make your kitchen safer.

Block of safety

Knife blocks are one of the best places to put knives when you aren't using them. If you have purchased a cutlery set, it may have come with a storage block with specifically designed slots for each individual knife. If you don't have one, you're still in luck. The universal knife block was designed to hold knives and other kitchen instruments, no matter what kind they are.

Knife storage blocks are designed to fit on kitchen counters, but they also can be stored in cabinets. If you have curious children you are always getting into things, you may want to consider keeping storage blocks in high or locked cabinets.

Case of safety

Knife cases are an alternative to storage blocks. Many high-quality knives (or knives given as gifts) come with a storage case. They can be made out of wood or plastic with a hard of soft exterior. The interior compartment often includes a combination of elastic pockets, clips, and zippers to hold knives in place.

If you don't have much space for knives, the compactness of a case might suit your needs perfectly. Cases can be stored in drawers or under cabinets, taking up a little space. The only drawback? They aren't as easily accessible.

Bags of safety

Knife storage bags are an alternative to cases, and they are often used out of the home on camping and fishing trips. Knife bags are made out of vinyl or polyurethane and contain an assortment of pockets, pouches and inserts for knives. Many bags include zippers that lock, helping to ensure the safety of children.

If you have a large set of knives or you plan on taking them out of the home, a knife bag might be right for you.

A word of caution

A loose knife has the potential to come into contact with fingers easily. That's why keeping knives loose in a drawer is not a good idea. The only knives that are safe to be kept in drawers are steak and butter knives–but you should even use caution with them.
