Baster

Baster

Basters are widely used in cooking meats and other dishes. Two main styles of basters are bulb and brush basters. Bulb basters are also known as 'Turkey' basters and use a squeeze bulb to siphon drippings from a pan to be poured over the meat. This allows flavor and moisture to help in the cooking process, offering tender and flavorful meat. Bulb basters are also handy for removing liquids such as fat and grease from roasting pans for discarding. Bulb basters are the most effective way to disperse larger amounts of liquid.

Brush basters are also used to dispense drippings, but are most effective in spreading sauces such as barbeque sauce. Some brush basters are similar in style to paint brushes with natural or synthetic hairs. Modern style brush basters are offered with silicone bristles. Silicone bristles hold ample amounts of sauce while remaining heat resistant.
