A recliner for the masses

The company's first recliner was a wood slat folding porch chair introduced in 1928.  This chair utilized an innovative reclining mechanism that followed the contour of a person's body, both sitting up and leaning back. After some companies refused to buy the chair saying it was too seasonal, La-Z-Boy introduced the first upholstered recliner for year-round use.  Sales skyrocketed and the La-Z-Boy recliner was born.

"Miracle of chairs"

The La-Z-Boy company got busy with new innovations in the 1960s.  In 1961 the La-Z-Boy Reclina-Rocker that we all know and love was introduced. This history making chair is known at La-Z-Boy as the "miracle of chairs" because it boosted sales from 1.1 million to 52.7 million between 1961 and 1971.  Other innovations included:

La-Z-Lounger. The La-Z-Lounger was introduced in 1963.  It incorporates a reclining mechanism and footrest.

Leather recliner. The first La-Z-Boy leather recliner was introduced in 1964.

Comfort selector.  The 3 position footrest, known as the Comfort Selector was introduced in 1965.

Keeping up

These recliners were all the first of their kind.  The La-Z-Boy recliners became so popular that the company had a hard time keeping up with consumer demand!  Today, the La-Z-Boy name is synonymous with comfort and quality because no other recliner gives you as many exclusive features.  The La-Z-boy features include:

A new focus

After years as primarily a recliner manufacturer, the company turned its focus on designing other motion products in the 1980s.  The expanded furniture line includes reclining sofas, sleep sofas and modular groups. 

In 1983, the company again charted new territory when it introduced its first line of stationary sofas.  The American Home Collection by La-Z-Boy was introduced in 1992.  This upscale collection of stationary chairs and sofas has earned La-Z-Boy respect as much more than a chair company.
