In Japan, futons, which are flat, rectangular mattresses, are actually not meant to be on permanent display. The 2-inch thick, batting-stuffed futons are placed on tatami, or straw, mats at night and folded and stored away during the day.

Our American futons maintain the Japanese futon's aspect of movement, but with a slightly different take. Most futons have a metal or wood convertible base that, when folded, creates a sofa-like seat. Unfolded, the futon frame becomes a base for a bed.

Futon mattresses are fabric covered and stuffed with foam and batting, usually to a standard mattress-sized width. Futon mattresses, like their frames, are also adaptable; when the frame is in the seated position, the mattress can be folded. When the frame is flattened, the mattress can be unfolded as well.
