Dos and don'ts of leather care and cleaning
Do's:
Dust or vacuum leather regularly.
Blot spills with a soft white cloth dampened in club soda or lukewarm distilled water to prevent watermark rings or stains. Never use regular tap water.
If a stain goes untreated and penetrates leather, use lukewarm distilled water and a soft cloth to massage stain and surrounding area.
When cleaning leather, always use a soft cloth, such as a chamois or a soft sponge, to prevent scratches or abrasion.
Once the stain is removed, blot area with a dry cloth and let the leather air-dry naturally.
Don'ts:
Do not place leather furniture in direct sunlight. The sun is a natural bleaching agent and leather upholstery will lighten or discolor over time in natural sunlight.
Never place furniture on or near heat sources. Heat can dry out leather and cause natural leather to crack and age prematurely.
Things to keep in mind when purchasing leather
Leather is a natural product and requires some care to maintain its natural beauty.
For minor or slight scratches on the surface of the leather, use a chamois to gently buff the scratch. The friction and heat from the rubbing helps redistribute the wax in the surrounding area to help cover the scratch.
Deeper scratches will not buff out the way smaller ones will.
Leather furniture is not suitable for everyone. Customers with children or pets may see more severe scratches and scuffs on their furniture than other leather customers.
Nubuck and suede should be brushed regularly with a soft suede brush.
Facts about leather
Leather is very durable, and for the most part is tear and puncture resistant.
Leather provides good protection from heat, cold, wind, and also repels moisture.
Strength, durability, color-fastness, quality of tanning and surface imperfections are all factors considered when classifying the quality of skin.
The less hair or wool there is on an anima hide, the tougher and stronger the resulting leather will be, especially the grain of the skin.
Leather is unique in that it stretches and molds to your body, yet at the same time retains its shape.
Leather actually becomes softer after years of use.
The original leather hide is actually odorless. The "leather smell" is a result of the materials used in the tanning process.
Genuine leather is the top slip of the animal hide. Its natural flaws and imperfections make it one-of-a-kind.
The sun will harm any natural substance. Over time, heat and sunlight can fade and dry out leather upholstery.
All spills should be cleaned up immediately to prevent staining. To clean light spills, use distilled water and a soft, clean cloth. Wipe or blot the spill in one direction.
Most light scratches can be camouflaged by massaging the scratch lightly with clean fingers.
Because it is so durable and easy to care for, leather furniture is great for families with children and pets. Be sure to check the leather you choose for waxing/scratching tolerance and choose the one best suited for your family's lifestyle.
