All About Christmas Wreaths

The origins of Christmas wreaths, like those of many symbolic Christmas decorations, predate the Christian celebration of Christmas. Over time, ancient pagan wreaths became invested with religious significance, resulting in the Advent wreath and eventually the Christmas wreath so widely used today.

The origins of Christmas wreaths

Pre-Christian pagan wreaths are known to have originated in two different countries: Germany and Sweden. Winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, falls in December, and was celebrated by pre-Christian Germanic peoples as a time of rebirth for nature and/or God. Bonfires were lit and evergreen wreaths gathered as signs of the approaching spring light.

The Christmas wreaths in Sweden were fashioned for similar purposes. The Swedish crown of lights, essentially a candle-bearing wreath fashioned as a crown, represented the wheel of the earth and the power of the sun. This prototype of the Christmas wreath was adapted to the Catholic story of St. Lucia, which in turn inspired the Advent wreath.

The design of the Christmas wreath was adapted from the Advent wreath. Christmas wreaths are distinct from Advent wreaths in that they don’t bear any candles.

The meaning of Christmas wreaths

Both the design and materials of Christmas wreaths are considered to be symbols of spiritual values applicable to both paganism and Christianity. The circular shape represents eternal rebirth while evergreens signify eternal life. Laurel has been used since the Roman Empire as a symbol for victory. Cedar suggests strength and healing, while holly, pine, and yew stand for immortality.

Of course many people use wreaths as Christmas decorations without any awareness of their historical significance. The beauty of Christmas wreaths is that such an understanding isn’t necessary. Even as purely decorative items, Christmas wreaths enhance the festive atmosphere of our homes, and serve as welcoming symbols on our doors during the most generous of holiday seasons.
