Halloween Home Decoration Ideas

Easy decorations you can make in an instant

Halloween is a favorite holiday for many of us. What other time of the year do we get to express our spooky sides and have some fun with black cats, ghosts, and witches? The following easy decoration ideas will put you on the right track and help make your home a haven of Halloween.

Kids' stuff

If you have little ones running around the house, chances are good they're all excited about trick-or-treating and they'll be thrilled to help decorate.

Fold a circle of orange construction paper in half and teach the kids how to cut into the fold to create symmetrical jack-o-lantern faces. Hang the faces in a window so that the sun shines through the cut-out holes.

Look around the backyard and find some rocks small enough to fit into your hand but large enough for easy painting. Gather tempera paint in Halloween colors and let the kids paint pumpkin faces, witches, and ghosts onto the rocks. Use them to line your walkway or your front steps to welcome little ghouls and goblins.

Get some white or gray yarn, and show the kids how to unravel the strands to create a filmy fibrous material. If you like, sprinkle glitter onto the yarn and then string it across the corners of the porch to make fake spider webs.

Inspiration from nature

If you're decorating for a party or you want a more general Halloween theme, look outside for inspiration. Objects from nature can be used to create easy Halloween props- and the kids can help with these, too.

Gather fall leaves and use hot glue to attach them to yarn or string. Use as a garland around tables or across the mantel. If you like, spray the leaves with clear sealant to make them last longer.

Pinecones, acorns and sprigs of berries make excellent Halloween props. Get some spray paint in spooky Halloween colors or glittering metallics and spray the items before displaying them as a centerpiece on your table.

Dry tree branches can be used to create a Halloween wreath. Hot-glue them into a circle with the branches overlapping for a thick, natural look. Let the kids help attach small construction paper cut-outs or Halloween ornaments to the wreath, then hang it on the front door.

Decorating your home for Halloween is easy. All you need is a little inspiration and a few supplies that are probably already in and around your home. Look around you for Halloween ideas and props, and get the family involved in some fun crafts. Before you know it, you'll have the most haunted house on the block.
