Your home, your style
Whether you're remodeling your home or buying a new one, interior design can be fun and rewarding. After all, it's your home, so why not have its interior design reflect your personal taste and style? Here are just a few things to consider to serve as an introduction to the world of home interior design.
What is the actual function that you will be doing in any room or group of rooms that are being considered? If multiple activities will take place, what is the primary activity? Prioritize these functions, and consider this list when designing.
How will this room or rooms interact with other rooms in the area? Is the room or rooms at the center of your home or to one side? The location of a room can have a large impact on its final design.
How would you anticipate the traffic pattern in a room? Will traffic travel through this room into yet another part of the home? These aspects must be considered, as it will ultimately depend on how the room should be designed.
What kind of lighting will you use in this room? Will it be mostly natural light during daytime hours, or will you rely on lamps and ceiling lights? Always consider the balance of nighttime and daytime lighting.
How will the mechanical needs of a room affect surrounding areas of the home? Remember that heating/air conditioning ducts and pipes and plumbing pipes all require specialized placement, in most cases. Because it's not often practical to relocate these systems, remember that you'll have to design with them, not around them.
Try to take advantage of natural outdoor vistas in your interior design. If the room or group of rooms has a field or ocean view, or any other pleasing landscape view, take advantage of it. Position the space to amplify the view, or bring the view into the space.
Do you wish the room or group to convey a certain mood or feeling? Do you want people to feel a certain way when entering or sitting in a room? If so, design the room accordingly. For example, if you wish to achieve a wide-open feeling, consider light colors, high ceilings, and plenty of space between objects like furniture.
