In its simplest terms, a picture frame is rectangle of wood, metal, or plastic used to encase a photograph. Picture frames come in a variety of different mouldings, colors, and textures, but one thing they have in common is the gilding.
Many picture frames come equipped with a pane of glass in order to protect the picture from the elements. Oftentimes the picture frame glass pane is treated with different coatings, most commonly UV filters. Higher end picture frames might use Denglass, which is an expensive form of glass that features a non reflective coating making the glass virtually invisible.
The two most common types of picture frames are L-style and F-style frames. L-style picture frames feature an L-shaped border of wood with the bottom part of the L holding the glass, object, and backing. F-style frames have an additional channel which allows them to be framed without a mat. Click on the articles below to find out more about picture frames.
