The art of topiary has been around for more than two centuries, tracing back to the Greeks and Romans who made designs out of shrubs and hedges in their vast gardens. Today, in order to create topiaries, landscape artists typically use compact, evergreen shrubs with dense foliage. They then cut, trim, and train plants into different shapes and sizes, much in the same manner that a sculptor would with stone.
The options with topiary are virtually limitless. Topiaries can be as subtle or as ostentatious as you can imagine. For instance, you can create something as simple and functional as a fence to surround your yard or garden, or you can trim a hedge or shrub into the shape of almost any animal, depending, of course, on the size of the shrub and the skill of the landscape artist.
