Vases can be defined by their shape. Most vases, although they certainly come in all different shapes and sizes, share similar anatomical features. Starting at the bottom, vases have what is known as a foot or base. Moving upward from there, you go into the body of the vase, which is oftentimes the largest and most noticeable section. The bulk of the vase's decorations are featured on the body. At the top of the body rest the shoulder, at which point the vase begins to curve inward and lead into the neck. The last part is the lip where the vase curves outward again.

Some vases even feature handles, although it is much less common. Throughout history, producing elegant vases has been seen as an art form.
