Keeping your fountain fabulous

Many water fountains only need an easy, periodic cleaning. Others just have special needs, like bottled or purified water to keep mineral deposits low. Often it's best to move outdoor water fountains indoors during cold winter months. Be sure to read cleaning and care sections of your water fountain's instruction manual.

Keep it wet

Check your fountain's water level daily to ensure that it never runs dry. Insufficient water will cause the pumps to run dry, and that will cause your water fountain to age much faster and not last nearly as long. Don't let the fountain run dry!

General care

To keep your fountain looking new for a long time, periodically empty it, take it apart, and wipe down all the parts with a clean cloth. Also remember to change the water as often as the manufacturer's manual says to.  If you have a harsh outdoor environment with dust and blowing leaves, clean more often.

Water fountain winter

Store your fountain away during winter or at least empty it so the parts don't take damage. Read operating instructions for other possible necessary precautions.

Troubleshooting

Once set up, most water fountains pretty much take care of themselves, but sometimes you may run into trouble. 

Here are some general tips:

If the pump is too noisy
Dampen vibrations in the pumping mechanism with a piece of scotchbrite. Make sure every connection is secured tightly so no air is getting in.  Also be sure the pump is fully submerged.

If water doesn't flow correctly
Make sure you have an adequate amount of water in the fountain.  Check to see that the pump nozzle is fully inserted and that the pump itself is fully submerged.  Be sure the switch is fully moved to the "on" position.
