Know the rules for installation and use

Existing building codes in 47 states throughout the United States permit the installation of ventless gas logs and other ventless gas heating products.

Specific counties and municipalities in Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming permit ventless gas log installation, though it is not allowed throughout other areas of these states. Montana and California currently do not allow ventless gas log installation, though California is in the process of creating the necessary regulations to allow it.

Some states allow ventless gas log installation in residences but not in commercial buildings. Ventless gas logs are not allowed in recreational vehicles such as campers and RVs in any state.

Check with your local fuel provider or building code official before purchasing or installing a ventless gas log to be sure of the regulations in your area.

How safe are ventless gas logs?

Because ventless gas logs cannot be installed legally in a few states, there is some speculation that they may not be safe or appropriate for use in the home.

However, ventless heating, including that of ventless gas logs, has a proven safety record that spans over half a century. In fact, many of the states that do not already allow ventless gas log installation are currently reviewing their restrictions to include provisions about who can install them and how and where they can be installed.

Strict safety standards

Concerns about the reliability of gas logs, the potential dangers of gas logs, and the effect of gas logs on inside air quality have, in part, led to many of the restrictions regarding ventless gas logs. Ironically, these very concerns have led to the standards that ensure their safety.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) maintains strict standards for many products, including ventless gas logs. These requirements (ANSI standard Z 21.11.2.) speak to the reliability of ventless gas logs, their potential dangers, and the effect of ventless gas longs on air quality inside homes.
