Try an accent light. To highlight specific areas of a room, try track lighting. A "track," or base mounts to the ceiling, and lights can be placed anywhere along the track and then be pointed where you want an accent light.
For general room brightening, try a freestanding torchiere lamp. The tall, slender lamp will fit well in corners; its concave, basin-like topper, which houses a light bulb, will throw light toward the ceiling and down into the room.
In darker rooms or those where direct light is an asset, such as a dining room, try a chandelier. Mounted to the ceiling, chandeliers cast light both down and around a room.
